[HINDENBURG] The Hindenburg airship was named after Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, who was President of Germany from 1925 to 1934. The LZ 129 Hindenburg was a large German commercial passenger-carrying rigid airship, the lead ship of the Hindenburg class, the longest class of flying machine and the largest airship by envelope volume. It was designed and built by the Zeppelin Company (Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH) on the shores of Lake Constance in Friedrichshafen and was operated by the German Zeppelin Airline Company (Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei). The airship flew from March 1936 until destroyed by fire 14 months later on May 6, 1937. Thirty-six people died in the accident, which occurred while landing at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in Manchester Township, New Jersey. Vintage gelatin silver 10 in. x 8 in. print, dated May 20, 1936 on the verso, featuring the airship over Lakehurst Naval Air Station, the site of the tragic accident almost a year later. "Hindenburg" is clearly printed on the hull and the German swastika can be seen on the tail fin. Minor creases at the left center. In very good condition.
