Extremely rare uncut proof sheet of the 1968 Topps "Fabulous Rock Records - Motown" series. During the late 1960s, when the sounds of Motown were sweeping across the nation, Topps decided to capitalize on the movement by producing a series of 45 RPM records featuring some of biggest names of the day: Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, and The Temptations, among others. The visual quality of the records is extraordinary but the distribution was apparently very modest (possibly related to their very costly retail price of 15 cents per record). We are not even 100% certain that these records were ever actually put on shelves for retail sale (we have never spoken to a collector who bought these in 1968, or found any examples in original collections). The set may have been a test issue (receiving little or no actual retail-store distribution). A total of eight different records (out of sixteen in a complete set) are presented here: three Diana Ross & The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, and The Marvelettes. The blank-back sheet (28 x 21 inches), which is printed on thick cardboard stock, displays a few surface ripples and light staining in the lower right corner. Vg-Ex condition. This is a very rarely seen and fascinating nonsport item that combines two great passions, collecting and music.
