(b. 1944) Mike d'Abo is an English singer and songwriter, best known as the former vocalist of Manfred Mann and as the composer of the popular song "Handbags and Gladrags." First rising to prominence in British rock through his assumption of a most unenviable task, succeeding Paul Jones as lead singer in Manfred Mann in 1966. He has proven himself across the four decades since. The band has remained a busy and well-known musical figure, in rock and in music in general. Leaving Manfred Mann in 1968, d’Abo and Tony Macaulay co-wrote "Build Me up Buttercup", which was recorded by The Foundations and sold over four million copies by April 1969, including one million discs in the United States. He has continued his varied career, acting in theatre, performing in concerts, and composing movie music.
