Herbert Jenkins, London, 1956. First Edition.

Octavo (8 ¾ X 5 ¾ in., 221 X 145 mm). 158 pages. Blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Spine ends gently bumped. Rear hinge repaired; else sound. Arthur Ronnie’s aviation-themed bookplate affixed to the front free endpaper. Priced clipped dust jacket is rubbed with edge wear, and paper tape reinforcement of the folds on the verso. A scarce book on this pioneer aviator.

Accompanied by a one page handwritten letter (ALS), dated Aug. 20, 1955, from Mr. Verdon-Roe to Art Ronnie. It reads (in full): “I hope you will receive the enclosed lithograph safely. I am writing to the producers pointing out that the artist [the Charles Hubbell Thompson Company lithograph offered in a separate listing] has added a considerable amount of extra tubing, 8 studs to the undercarriage, so I’m rendering a sketch showing how it was constructed. The strut between the wheel centers look as if it would offer much resistance to the air, actually it was streamlined. The semi side view shows depth of blocks. It was of course very light and strong. It is the first time I’ve seen this picture and I am writing for half a dozen copies with bill for same. The fuselage is shown without the front portion being covered in with slots for cooling its cylinders. As --- were rather frequent the front portion was not always recovered. Enclosed a small postcard, which may be of interest. Sincerely, A. Verdon-Roe.” Also includes a printed photo (taken from a book or other publication) signed by Mr. Verdon Roe, featuring him standing next to his plane at the 1910 Blackpool Meeting. A fantastic letter with wonderful content from this pioneer British aviator.
