A new top design from Jon Sauer, who specializes in the centuries-old technique of ornamental turning, creating complex geometric designs with a variety of small, revolving cutters on a specialized lathe. Sauer turns his tops on antique lathes, and describes his technique as "a mixture of yesterday's tooling with today's technology."

The top for this creation was made on the rose engine lathe. Alone it stands 2.75" tall x 1.75" wide. There is a captive betel nut bead on the stem that is free to revolve.

A self-taught turner, Jon's passion for turning started at an early age. "I now find joy and satisfaction taking a raw material, changing its shape, and seeing a new form evolve. I find a special joy in turning spinning tops, perhaps because my philosophy is that play is good and life is about having a bit of fun."

Jon's work is included in many Permanent Museum Collections, including the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Yale University Art Gallery and others.
