In Japan, the classical Chinese elements, wu xing, are prominent. These are Wood (Ki), Fire (Hi), Earth (Tsuchi), Metal (Kin), and Water (Mizu). Also, the materials of the piece represent three elements of the periodic table-iron (steel), copper, and carbon (graphite). The Kanji symbols on the jar represent wood, and metal.
