We know the past and can experience it vicariously by examining the remains of animals that lived long ago. Fossils allow us to imagine, deduce, and understand what life was like. The "fossils" selected for this piece are representative of our ancestors who inhabited the air, land, and water before us. The nine tiny boxes all can be designated to contain items that represent our feelings, knowledge, and secrets, depending on what we choose to place inside them. Thus, they represent our past and future for others to experience.
The display case provides a special space to see the collection of small treasures as a unified whole.

Jim Christiansen has been a full time woodturner since 1992. His work has been shown in national and international exhibitions and has been featured in a number of books and publications. A major emphasis in his designs is to communicate feelings. He has authored one woodturning book and several articles on design and critique. He believes that mentoring is a topic that should be embraced by more turners.

Virgil Aurand is an artist and technology professional based out of Northern Idaho. He shares studio space with other artists in Moscow, Idaho, and works with technology clients all over the country. "My art is influenced by nature, philosopy, travel, science, art, and other artists. The natural world, the passage of time, the beauty of impermanence and beauty of imperfection interests and intrigues me, and is part of the aesthetic of my current work."
