"The most wonderful aspect of wood is its accessibility. Materials are readily available, tool requirements are simple, and it is readily worked by hand or machine. For this piece, I imagine a complex vessel within a block and then develop the means of making it using the tools of both conventional and ornamental turning.
The work is constructed from layers of plywood that are mounted on a faceplate and trued on my wood lathe and then cut on my home-built ornamental turning machine."

Educated in engineering, Dewey Garrett took up the wood lathe in order to develop general woodworking skills for cabinetry and furniture. He found the process so stimulating and challenging that wood-turning has become a dedicated creative pursuit.. He is a self-taught turner and makes and modifies his tools to create unique turnings. His work is an ongoing exploration of the structure of forms constrained by the symmetry and simplicity of a lathe.

His work is regularly exhibited in National and International juried competitions for both woodturning and three-dimensional art.
