An auction of works from the collection of Dr. Irving Lipton - a collection that was, at one point, the largest collection of wood art in the world.
Dr. Lipton collected artists working in wood for three decades, beginning in 1972. It was a period of tremendous growth in the field of contemporary wood art and artistic woodturning, and many of the artists that Lipton collected went on to become leading figures in the field.
Dr. Lipton took on the role of patron, providing funds to make works of art possible. He enjoyed being on the cutting edge of contemporary wood art, collecting the most recent explorations by an artist, while also commissioning works that would take them–and, by extension, the burgeoning field – to the the next level. He often loaned works for museum exhibitions, and at any given time around 10% of the collection as traveling.
Works from the Lipton Collection are today in the permanent collections of a number of museums, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Minneapolis Art Institute, the Long Beach Museum of Art, the Honolulu Museum of Art, and Yale University Art Gallery.
Works by many of the artists in this auction are included in major museum collections. In fact, many of the works in the auction were considered by museums, but did not make the final cut.
