Artist’s note: Tea encourages simplicity, the feel of the tea bowl in the hand, the simple room design, the company of friends - all a moment of purity. The way of tea refers to the way of life; it allows oneself to be removed from the mundane daily affairs and achieve - if only short-lived - serenity and inner peace. The ideals of the Japanese Tea Ceremony motivated me to create "Celebrating the Senses".
About the artist: Helga Winter was born in Germany and came to America as a young woman to study Education. She received her undergraduate degree at the University of Texas in Austin in 1978 and her graduate degree at Vanderbilt Peabody College in Nashville, TN in 1981. She apprenticed herself with fine furniture maker and wood carver Paul Pitts in 1982 and studied with wood turners Rude Osolnik and David Ellsworth in 1984. Helga received an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Tennessee Arts Commission in 1986.
After she moved to Port Townsend, WA in 1987 her turned vessels became her canvas. Helga discovered Madrone as a turning wood and was one of the first woodturners to explore its “orneryness” and utilize the instability of the wood to her advantage. She turned the roots, trunks, as well as the branches and began embellishing the surfaces with dyes and wax resist. Now she also uses acrylic as well as oil paints on her vessels.

All auction items are available for on-site viewing beginning Thursday, June 12th at 5:30PM at the Phoenix Convention Center, 100 N 3rd St, Phoenix, Arizona. Remote bidding on-line is open. The live auction starts at 3:15PM MST/6:15PM Eastern (Note: Arizona does not observe Daylight Savings Time). You must be pre-registered to bid online.
Sales will not be subject to state and local tax. Arizona law provides that certain organizations are exempt from Arizona Transaction Privilege (Sales) Tax (TPT). Retails sales made by a non-profit charitable section 501(c)(3)organization are exempt from Arizona TPT.

Shipping Details:
SHIPPING: After the purchase price has been paid in full and after the sale has been completed, property must be removed from the auction at the Buyer’s expense. The American Association of Woodturners will, as a service to Buyers, arrange to have the property packed, insured, and shipped via UPS at the request, expense and entire risk of the Buyer. Any claims will be between carrier and Buyer.

It is the bidder’s responsibility to determine condition, genuineness, value and other attributes of the property. Bidders who bid from off-site and are not present at the live auction understand and acknowledge that they may not be able to inspect an item as well as if they examined it in person.
2. DISPUTES: The American Association of Woodturners shall designate the winning bidder after each item is auctioned. If a dispute arises between two or more bidders, the American Association of Woodturners reserves the right to reopen bidding. The American Association of Woodturner's designation of a buyer shall be final.
3. BIDDING & PRE-BIDDING: The American Association of Woodturners is providing internet and live bidding as a service to bidders. Bidders acknowledge and understand that this service may or may not function correctly the day of the auction. Under no circumstances shall a bidder have any claim against the American Association of Woodturners or anyone else if the internet service fails to operate correctly before or during the live auction.
4. The American Association of Woodturners has the right to accept or deny bidders from attending their auctions, both in person and online.
5. Online bidders agree and understand that they will not be invoiced and may not be able to pay until the entire, onsite auction is over. All purchases will be charged to your credit card immediately following the auction. Any other payment arrangement must be arranged and approved by the American Association of Woodturners a minimum of 48 hours prior to the auction.
6. The American Association of Woodturners makes no representations whatsoever that the Buyer of a work of art will acquire any reproductions rights thereto.
