Artist Statement: North Carolina is home to the largest Petroglyphs east of the Mississippi on the Judaculla Rock located in the western mountains of the state. This rock contains 1548 symbols that have yet to be deciphered. It is believed to have been created by the Cherokee Indians but contains many unfamiliar images. Unfortunately, acid rain is slowly removing all traces of these ancient symbols. This piece is a tribute to the mysterious writings on Judaculla Rock and portrays a rock protecting the traces of civilization and Judaculla Petroglyphs on the inside.
