An ancient harp-like instrument, which has vertical string holders with two ranks of strings, a bridge in the form of a standing figure, and a half calabash hollowed. This instrument with strings is very close to the guitar, played throughout western Africa. The resonance box (or resonator) is usually made from a half calabash or gourd with a wood post to which the strings are attached. The calabash is covered with goat or cow hide. Harps with carved vertical string holders such as in this are rare to find. Drawing on cowhide with cowrie shell accents. Measures 6" x 22". In very good condition. From the collection of Ken McMeans. 20% of the proceeds will benefit the Jeremy Wilson Foundation.
