31 ½" x 66 ½". 1944. TASS Window Poster titled in Cyrillic: "Glory to the Liberators of Chisinau!," also known as "Glory to Liberated Kishinev." It features moving artwork of an elderly man welcoming a soldier home from war by by Mikhail Mikhailovich Solov'ev and Aleksandr Alekseevich Zharov. Hand-stenciled and hand-painted in vivid colors. The Soviet TASS news agency assembled a group of over 90 artists, poets, writers, stencil cutters, and painters to produce inspirational war effort poster designs which hung in the windows of factories, schools, and shop windows, hence their nickname "TASS Windows." Equipment shortages during the war meant stencils were used rather than lithographic printing, which produces a striking effect. In the stencilling process, paint is applied to the paper and sits on the surface, rather than soaking in as it does in printing. The colors remain extremely bright and vivid. In remarkably preserved condition given the ephemeral nature of this medium. Folded, with Japanese rice paper reinforcement at the folds on the verso. Exhibits 8" separation tears along the lower and upper left horizontal folds, light stains, chipping, and edge tears.
